Program

Archiving the Moment:SaveMLAK’s research on the impact of COVID-19 for 2020-2021 (Koyasu, Nobue)

SaveMLAK is a project launched in response to the Great East Japan Earthquake of 2011. SaveMLAK collects information from MLAKs (Museums, Libraries, Archives, and Kominkan) affected by the disaster and publishes it on its website.

In March 2020, public libraries in Japan were closed due to the spread of COVID-19. SaveMLAK has been conducting a survey on library trends due to COVID-19 since April 2020, taking over from Calil Inc. The survey was conducted by volunteers from inside and outside the library. As of the end of May 2021, the survey has been conducted 19 times.

Although the closure rate exceeded 90% in May 2020, many libraries are now open despite the third declaration of emergency, as policies regarding the closure of educational facilities have since been revised.

In addition to the status of library openings, we have also picked up as much as possible about the status of library entry records and the trend of library services under the situation of restricted use as a measure against infectious diseases, and have compiled and published them in press releases.

In this presentation, we will analyze the situation of Japanese public libraries during the COVID-19 epidemic, which was revealed from the archived data obtained through this survey. This presentation will include the results of the survey until 2021.

Maplat - Map application platform that utilizes historical maps and cultural assets(Otsuka, Kohei)

I will introduce Maplat, an open source platform that allows historical maps to be used in conjunction with accurate maps without damaging their own beauty and context.

It can give historical maps, as cultural assets managed by libraries, a widely recognized use by the general public, such as for historical study and tourism.

In addition, since it can display general data such as GeoJson, it can be used as a platform to provide citizens with information such as a list of cultural properties.

An introduction to this platform will be given in this program, including reports of actual applications.
